  9. File-Ex adds file management functions like Find, Copy, Delete, 
  10. Rename, and MakeDir to the Open and Save dialogs of most Windows
  11. applications automatically (any that use the Windows common 
  12. dialogs in COMMDLG.DLL), and can be trained to work with almost 
  13. any other program.

  15. If you have just installed File-Ex and are reading this from 
  16. the Notepad program, try it out now by selecting File from the 
  17. menu, then Open.  You should see the 'recent...' lists at the
  18. bottom of the Open dialog.  If you need help, click the 
  19. 'File-Ex' button, and then the Help button from that dialog.  
  20.  
  21. File-Ex runs as a taskbar tray icon in Windows 95 -- you should
  22. see a small File-Ex icon at the far right of the taskbar.  Right-
  23. click on this for the main menu, or double-click on it to bring
  24. up a dialog with configuration, help, & option functions.

  29.             Notes on the File-Ex 95 v2.0 Beta Release

  32. As with any beta software (and many 'released' programs), you may
  33. encounter program bugs using File-Ex.  These can be anywhere from
  34. a spelling error to a system crash.  We recommend that you save
  35. your work often "just in case", which of course is good practice
  36. any time.  If you do see any problems that seem to be related to
  37. File-Ex, please let us know (preferrably by E-mail).
  38.  
  39. Be sure to check back at our web site on a weekly basis for 
  40. updates!
  41.  
  42.        These are some known problems at this point:
  43.  
  44. On some systems, when File-Ex is in the StartUp group (to load 
  45. when Windows loads), Windows will seem to 'freeze' when starting 
  46. up, before it displays the desktop.  Just move the mouse around 
  47. to get it to continue.  (If you do see this problem, please let
  48. us know so that we can narrow down the cause.)
  49.  
  50. There has been a problem reported with some uninstaller and virus
  51. programs.  If you encounter any problems (or for that matter if you
  52. _don't_ have problems and you're running an uninstaller or virus 
  53. program), please let us know.
  54.

  56.    Other known features that still need to be addressed:
  57.  
  58. If an application uses long file names but does NOT use the 
  59. explorer-style dialog, File-Ex does not know it can handle long 
  60. names and will get a mixture of long/short names, and not allow 
  61. long-name entry in its Copy/Move/Rename/etc functions.
  62.  
  63. For 16-bit applications that use common dialogs, File-Ex 
  64. defaults to using short names.  To get it to use long names, 
  65. it must be trained (Learn New Dialog).
  66.  
  67. All trained dialogs will use the old-style file dialog (but with
  68. long name capability).  There will be an option later to use
  69. the new explorer-style dialog.
  70.  
  71. Applications that use explorer-style dialogs will have the 
  72. row of file management buttons added to them by default.  However 
  73. there is an option in the dialog configuration to not add those 
  74. buttons, in case you prefer using the right mouse button to do
  75. file management and want to make the dialog smaller.
  76.  
  77. Applications that use explorer-style dialogs but not comdlg32.dll 
  78. (such as Word 7) can only be trained for bringing up the 
  79. old-style dialog.  This will be changed to allow adding the 
  80. recent file lists and file information directly to the original 
  81. dialog.  (This will be an option regardless of the style of the 
  82. original dialog.)

  86.   Other things to be aware of:
  87.  
  88. There has been a problem reported with the COMCTL32.DLL that is
  89. installed with the Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, which affects
  90. not only File-Ex but other programs.  If you get the 'big yellow
  91. screen' with a COMCTL32 bug message, please let us know what
  92. you had just done at the time -- we're not sure if this is a
  93. problem with the new DLL with MSIE 3.0 or if it's something
  94. else, so we also need to know whether you have installed MSIE 3.0.
  95. (We think Microsoft has a patch for this, but we have not yet 
  96. located it.  Re-installing the original COMCTL32.DLL may be the 
  97. best option.
  98.  
  99. File-Ex does not cooperate well with some other programs that 
  100. do the same thing (modify the file dialogs).  If you have these,
  101. then you should disable them when running File-Ex.  These include:
  102.   Instant File Access (don't load it at the same time)
  103.   Long File Names (some reported problems, but usually works)
  104.   Norton File Assist (disable it from the desktop options)
  105.  
  106. If you discover others, please let us know.

  109.   Beta evaluation period:
  110.  
  111. This beta version will 'time out' after 30 days of use, just as
  112. the shareware version (it will still be functional at a reduced
  113. level).  However, when File-Ex 95 is released, you can also 
  114. download the shareware version and you will have another 30 days 
  115. to evaluate it (the count-down will be reset).  So don't worry 
  116. that you're using up your evaluation time on a beta version!
  117.  
  118. You may also purchase File-Ex 95 at any time during the beta, in 
  119. which case you will receive the full released version as soon 
  120. as it's ready.

  190. If you're not familiar with File-Ex, please read the
  191. 'Overview' section in the Help file after installation.

  194. To install File-Ex, run SETUP.EXE from Windows:
  195.  
  196. 1. From the Start Menu, select Run...
  197.  
  198. 2. In the Command Line box, type d:\path\SETUP, where 'd' is 
  199.    the letter of the drive and 'path' is the directory where 
  200.    the File-Ex files are.
  201.  
  202.    For example:
  203.      C:\FILEEX\SETUP
  204.  
  205. 3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
  206.  
  207. 4. After File-Ex installation is complete, it will need to 
  208.    validate some files.  This will happen automatically the 
  209.    first time File-Ex is invoked, so you don't need to do 
  210.    anything special for this to happen.

  212. 5. If you're not familiar with File-Ex, open the Help file 
  213.    and read through the Overview sections.

  216. What files should be where, after installation
  217. ----------------------------------------------
  218. These files should be in your File-Ex program directory :

  231. The file FILEEX.DAT will be copied to the 'Data' directory.  
  232. (This is usually the same as your Program directory, but may 
  233. be different, for instance, in a network environment where the 
  234. Program directory is shared.  The FILEEX.DAT file should be in
  235. a place not shared by users, similar to INI files.)
  236.  
  237. These files are not copied anywhere, and are not needed by 
  238. File-Ex after setup:

  243. The files COMMEX.INI and FILEEX.INI will be created by the 
  244. Setup program, and will be placed in the Windows directory.

  246. The file FILEEX.LOG will be created in the Windows directory, 
  247. and is useful for troubleshooting.  If everything works after 
  248. installation, this may be deleted.

  251. Technical information on installation
  252. -------------------------------------
  253. The installation procedure does the following:
  254.  Copy appropriate files to the Program and Data directories.
  255.  Add a File-Ex group with appropriate icons.
  256.  Add File-Ex to the startup group, if requested.
  257.  Verify that the operations succeeded.
  258.  Run File-Ex if requested.
  259.  Run notepad to display the readme.txt file if requested.
  260.  
  261. When File-Ex is actually invoked for the first time (through a
  262. File/Open or File/Save command, or by automatically loading 
  263. File-Ex), it validates the information files (fileex.hlp, 
  264. readme.txt, order.txt).  This ensures that File-Ex cannot be 
  265. modified and re-distributed with different company contact/order
  266. information.

  270. About the Evaluation Period
  271. ---------------------------

  273. File-Ex is Shareware.  This means that you are free to try it 
  274. out for 30 days. It will be fully functional during that time,
  275. so you can try all of its functions.

  277. After using it for 30 days (not necessarily calendar days, but
  278. when it's been used on 30 different days), some of the functions
  279. will be unavailable.  You will still be able to use the basic 
  280. functions like Copy and Delete, but the advanced functions 
  281. (Find and MakeDir) will not be available unless you register 
  282. (purchase) the program.

  285. Giving Copies to Friends -- (Please Do!)
  286. ----------------------------------------

  288. Shareware works best when you 'share' it with other people!  If
  289. you like this program, we would appreciate it if you spread it 
  290. around.  Give copies to friends and co-workers, or even upload 
  291. it to your favorite BBS.

  293. Please only distribute the original compressed (.ZIP) file that 
  294. you received File-Ex in.  This is the only way to have the 
  295. complete file set needed to install File-Ex, since the File-Ex 
  296. directory after installation does not contain all of the 
  297. necessary installation files.

  299.   Note: If this is a purchased copy, please DON'T distribute 
  300.   it!  The registered copy contains your registration key file,
  301.   and giving this to someone else is illegal.  Please only 
  302.   distribute the shareware version!
